Lyra Howell

Preschool Teacher

“We shall walk together on this path of life, for all things are part of the universe and are connected with each other to form one whole unity.”

~Maria Montessori

Lyra grew up in Northern California, where she spent countless hours in the forest picking blueberries, making friends with snails, and attempting to save injured birds. These early experiences forged a deep love and respect for nature, and she has always felt happiest when surrounded by trees. After moving to Toronto at the age of nine, she continued her nature explorations on regular family camping trips to Algonquin Park and other National Parks across Canada.

After high school, Lyra pursued her love of art at the Toronto School of Art, studying both drawing and painting. Her love of art led her to work at a children’s art studio, where she realized her passion for working with young children. She taught art for several years before returning to school to study Early Childhood Education at George Brown College.

Lyra went on to work with children in a wide variety of settings, from a small parent-run co-op to a women’s shelter and kindergarten classroom. Eventually, her love of travel took her to coastal Mexico, Oaxaca, where she lived and worked as a volunteer for six months. There, she was able to gain experience working with children with disabilities as a volunteer at a rehabilitation center. She also learned to speak Spanish, a skill she is always eager to practice!

Upon returning to Toronto, Lyra was employed as an ECE by a Montessori school. She quickly fell in love with the Montessori philosophy, which is built on fostering independence, building community, and meeting each child at their level. This experience led her to pursue her Montessori training at the Foundation for Montessori Education in Toronto. After completing this intensive one-year training, Lyra worked as a Montessori guide at a school in Toronto’s Leaside area for over two years and is grateful to all the children she has learned from during her teaching career.

Lyra and her husband are now enjoying the beautiful coastlines and forests of New Brunswick! When not out exploring, Lyra can be found painting, baking, reading, or doing yoga.
