Introduction to Forest School – A Practical Guide for Educators is a one week training program intended for educators currently working with children or those who plan on working with children in the future. This course is an experiential, in-person learning program that will provide you with an overview of the principles of Forest School. You will gain the skills and knowledge needed to incorporate these principles into your day-to-day practices confidently.

This program combines the fundamental principles of Forest School with best practices from nature-based education around child-centered, inquiry-based learning (chasing kids’ curiosity!). The course covers topics such as; identifying suitable sites outdoors, safe tool usage, woodland stewardship, campfire management, learning & development in relationship to Forest School ethos, and planning a forest school program.

At the end of this program, you will receive a Certificate of Completion, a Participant Guidebook, and the confidence to incorporate Forest School practices into your program!

Course Deliverables 

 A certified Forest School Practitioner will deliver this training program onsite at Tír na nÓg Forest School, located at 259 Foster Thurston Drive, Saint John, New Brunswick. Our flagship log cabin schoolhouse is located on 140 acres of woodland adjacent to Rockwood Park, one of the largest urban parks in North America.

Course Delivery & Dates

The cost of the training program is $1,100.00. Half of the course cost is due upon registration and the remaining balance is due prior to the course start date. You may be eligible for funding to take this course through the Provincial Department of Education Training & Labour for those currently working in Early Learning Centers in New Brunswick. Please inquire by emailing info@tirnanogforestschool.com if you are currently working in an ELC and would like more information.

Jessica McCullum is Atlantic Canada’s First Forest School Practitioner. She has extensive experience working with children and creating incredible outdoor spaces for both children and adults to explore and learn in nature. Working within the Forest School ethos of child-centered and emergent learning, Jessica delivers practical and meaningful experiences that will help you support the holistic development of children through practices firmly rooted in nature-based inquiry.
